Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson:
The (uncomfortable) Ideal of Leadership Tandems
Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.
Civil War Generals.
For the Bad Side.
For the Wrong Side.
For Slavery. Human Chattel.
For Secession.
For Giving Up on Us All.
For the South.
Traitors.
And yet:
anyone learning to collaborate and lead must study and admire them in many respects.
Because they were good generals.
Lee would say things to Stonewall like:
"take the hill;
if practicable".
No list of instructions.
Borne of trust in his judgment.
Place faith in your deputies.
"Assess. Then take action."
Only as good as the deputy.
Stonewall got his arm blow'd off. Then he died.
We come now to Gettysburg.
Richard Ewell. Reb general.
Not as good as Stonewall.
Lee to Ewell: "take the hill if practicable."
Ewell got slaughtered.
Decisive battle.
Lost the war.
What if Stonewall had lived?
Wisdom is wisdom.
Prudence is prudence.
we all need to sing and dance together. even if we don't know all the words:
